Periodontics
This specialised field of dentistry is concerned with issues affecting the gums and tissues that support the teeth; i.e. bones and ligaments. Our general dentists treat the infection if it is localised, but a specialist will be required to deal with more widespread, or particularly serious or aggressive cases. The treatment is carried out under local anaesthetic over several stages, in conjunction with the dental hygienist. It begins with tartar removal (deep scaling); then, depending on the healing process, surgery may be required to clean the roots under visual control.
